WMOF2018 Countdown

The One Year Countdown to World Meeting of Families 2018 has begun!

Welcome to our Newsletter! We have now less than one year to go to World Meeting of Families 2018! We celebrated the one-year countdown mark at Knock Shrine with thousands of families from around Ireland. That day, we presented the one year programme of preparations to WMOF2018, the official prayer for WMOF2018, the specially commissioned icon of the Holy Family and shared faith and fun activities with all the families. We are delighted to have launched a new Amoris website and catechetical resources to prepare for the event. We are also continuing to promote our volunteering programme across the island at various events. We are busy with preparing for this event and look forward to welcoming people from all over the world! And don’t forget that booking is now open for the Pastoral Congress!

An exciting and interactive journey of reflection on love, marriage and the family has begun! We are thrilled to present to you the Amoris: Let’s Talk Family! Let’s Be Family! Programme and invite you to join us while we prepare our hearts to attend World Meeting of Families 2018. Visit our new Amoris website and download resources to accompany you on the way!

  • Parish Conversations: a six-session discussion programme exploring key elements of Pope Francis’ document on the family The Joy of Love.
  • Practical Activities for Popular Moments: a set of practical engaging activities, covering seasonal and family moments across the year, to celebrate and support marriage and family life. Some of these activities are for families to carry out in their own homes, and others can be run by parish communities or groups of parishes, from a simple prayer before meals, to a family picnic for all the parish.
  • Parish Conversations Facilitator’s Guide: a basic orientation for pastoral leaders and local volunteers on how to work with the above resources.
Access to Amoris Materials online: www.amoris.ie or www.worldmeeting2018.ie/amoris
Training nights will be held across the island to introduce these resources to parishes and to equip small teams of volunteers to organise some of the activities.

Did you know that the Amoris Programme will include animations for adults, young people and children? These will unpack the vision on love, marriage and family presented by Pope Francis in “The Joy of Love” as we prepare for the World Meeting of Families, taking place in Dublin, Ireland in August 2018. Here is a short preview for you to see … full series to follow on the dedicated Amoris website: www.amoris.ie

We are delighted to present to you the icon of the Holy Family, specially commissioned by WMOF2018, written by iconographer Mihai Cucu, and assisted by the Redemptoristine Sisters of the Monastery of St Alphonsus, Iona Road, Dublin, as part of their ongoing prayer for families. The icon was unveiled and anointed on the 21st August 2017, during the launch of the one-year programme of preparation at the National Novena in Knock, Ireland. It has now started to travel to each diocese in Ireland to encourage reflection and prayer as part of the journey of preparations to WMOF2018. The icon is accompanied by petition boxes, where families can write their intentions and prayer. Contemplative communities around Ireland will pray for the intentions collected during the coming year.

This icon takes the form of a triptych which looks, from the outside, somewhat like a house with front doors. On these outside doors, we are presented with the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, who carry with them the desire of God to protect. Their heads are bowed in adoration and service of God, the Holy One. On the base is the inscription “Amoris Laetitia”, ‘The Joy of Love’, the title of Pope Francis’ post-Synodal exhortation on love in the family, the source of our reflections during the World Meeting of Families 2018.
When the doors of this icon are opened we see in the centre the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph seated at table, sharing a meal and sharing their faith. Their faith was celebrated in their home. It is in our home that the reality of God-with-us is communicated and passed on to future generations. Their gathering around the table is reminiscent of the Three Angels in the famous 15th century Icon of the Holy Trinity by Andrei Rublev. Christian Marriage is sometimes compared with the Holy Trinity, as a communion of the giving and receiving of love that is life-giving. Indeed, the family is called to be the “living icon” of the Most Holy Trinity.
Similarly to the icon above, the Holy Family have a place at their table for us. They invite us to join them. They are no strangers to the trials of family life. They themselves have been refugees, fleeing the violence of Herod. They have known great anxiety. Hence the radishes and bitter herbs of the Passover meal represent the sorrows and trials of the people of Israel in their slavery also represent for us the trials and sacrifices of patience and love experienced in every family. The presence of the unleavened bread and cup of wine on their table call to mind the Eucharist for us.
Flanking the Holy Family icon are those two Gospel narratives: the Raising of Jairus’ Daughter and the Wedding Feast of Cana. Passages in the Gospels in which we see Jesus’ deep compassion and concern for marriage and for those living with the burdens of family life.
An icon is not like a photograph, nor is it a portrait. It is an image which invites us to prayer. It is our hope that it will invite people to prayer while we prepare our hearts for World Meeting of Families 2018. More information on the icon will be available from our website in the coming weeks.

We present to you the official Prayer for World Meeting of Families 2018 and we invite you and your family to join us in praying for one another. The prayer is available in multiple languages on our website and is accessible for young and old to be able to pray. It invokes the protection of the Holy Family, of Jesus grandparents and of saints Louis and Zélie Martin, canonised married couple and parents of St Thérèse of Lisieux.
God, our Father,
We are brothers and sisters in Jesus your Son,
One family, in the Spirit of your love.

Bless us with the joy of love.
Make us patient and kind,
gentle and generous,
welcoming to those in need.
Help us to live your forgiveness and peace.
Protect all families with your loving care,
Especially those for whom we now pray:
[We pause and remember family members and others by name].
Increase our faith,
Strengthen our hope,
Keep us safe in your love,
Make us always grateful for the gift of life that we share.
This we ask, through Christ our Lord,

and guide, pray for us.
father and protector, pray for us.
Saints Joachim and Anne, pray for us.
Saints Louis and Zélie Martin, pray for us.

Visit our website for more information and translations of the prayer to other languages.
