A wonderful occasion
A wonderful occasion this morning, Wednesday 3rd January 2018, when Monsignor Piotr Tarnawski, Chargé d’Affaires at the Apostolic Nunciature made the announcement that Monsignor Dermot Farrell, a priest of the Diocese of Meath was chosen by Pope Francis to be the next Bishop of Ossory. Monsignor Farrell is currently serving as Vicar General, and Parish Priest of Dunboyne & Kilbride, in his home diocese.
As Bishop elect of Ossory he was joined this morning by his two immediate predecessors Bishop Laurence Forristal and Bishop Seamus Freeman as he stepped forward to greet those who had gathered. Many people from around the diocese along with priests and religious were in attendance to welcome Bishop elect Farrell to what will be his new home in Ossory. Recalling the commentaries of Mícheál O’Hehir and Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh Monsignor Farrell noted that places such as Ballyhale, Clara, Dunamaggan, Freshford, Glenmore, Tullaroan are emblazoned in his mind as the clubs of many great hurlers and now, as parishes of this great diocese. Trusting in the call of the Lord and in providence of God, Monsignor Farrell noted how glad he was to accept the call to serve here in Ossory and how he looks forward to working closely with all in this diocese in the years that lie ahead.
While welcoming Monsignor Farrell to Ossory, Monsignor Michael Ryan acknowledged delight that a man of such ability was chosen to lead our Diocese as Bishop. He offered on behalf of the people, priests and religious of the diocese our support and loyalty as Monsignor Farrell generously takes on this new ministry. He noted confidently that Monsignor Farrell will find here among the people of Ossory not only a warm welcome but an enthusiastic commitment to the promotion of the Good News of the Gospel in the years ahead.
May St Kieran, St Canice and the Apostles he succeeds, guide and support Monsignor Farrell in his work in Ossory and may God guide us always.
