On Sunday 11th March our diocese celebrated the Ordination of Dermot Farrell as Bishop of Ossory. St Mary’s Cathedral was at capacity with over 1000 people in attendance at the celebration of this wonderful occasion. Bishop Farrell is now the 95th Bishop of Ossory and successor to St Kieran.
The ordination ceremony was led by Most Rev. Diarmuid Martin, Archbishop of Dublin, and by Most Rev. Michael Smith, Bishop of Meath and Most Rev. Jude Thaddeus Okolo, Papal Nuncio to Ireland along with a large number of concelebrating bishops and priests.
Bishop Farrell’s mother Carmel, his brother Fintan and his sisters Mary, Orla, Collette, Gemma and many family and friends, along with neighbours and parishioners from his home parish of Castletown Geoghegan and the many communities he has served joined the people of our Diocese for this joyful celebration. Many members of the community were formally represented in the Cathedral along with a wonderful spread of people from every parish in our Diocese.
We wish Bishop Farrell every blessing as he begins his pastoral ministry leading the Church in Ossory and some of the images of this wonderful day can be seen here. This wonderful occasion for our Diocese will be documented in the next edition of the Ossory Times, keep an eye out for it this Easter in your parish.
