Words of Welcome from Ms Gemma Mulligan, Co-Ordinator of the Ossory Pastoral Plan
at the Mass of Installation of Bishop Ger Nash, Bishop of Ossory
13th September 2026, 3pm
You are most welcome to this day of great joy for the Diocese of Ossory, as we gather to celebrate the installation of Bishop Ger Nash as the 97th Bishop of Ossory.
As shepherd of this Diocese, Bishop Ger will lead us—priests, religious and lay faithful—as we work together to live out the Gospel and build up the Church in our midst. Ossory is a proud diocese with a rich tradition and history, and today we mark another historic moment. We welcome our new Bishop and, through him, a new relationship with the Diocese of Ferns.
This is a moment of possibility and hope as we look to the future with a spirit of collaboration, shared mission and openness to what lies ahead. But today is first and foremost a day for Ossory. A few moments ago, Bishop Ger was greeted at the door of the Cathedral and presented with a crucifix as a sign that he is now entrusted with the pastoral care of the Church of Ossory. He was also presented with water from the well at Seir Kieran, the ancient seat and origin of our Diocese, water which he blessed us with. Later in the celebration, Bishop Ger will be presented with the Book of the Gospels, reminding him of his call to proclaim the Word of God among us with unfailing patience and sound teaching. Finally, he will be presented with the crosier, a sign of his pastoral office and of his responsibility to keep watch over the whole flock entrusted to his care, in which the Holy Spirit has appointed him to shepherd the Church of God in Ossory.
We welcome him to our Diocese and assure him of our prayer, support and collaboration in the years ahead. Today, we welcome our new Bishop and we also warmly welcome his family – His sisters Teresa and Mags and all bishop Ger’s extended family Today, we pray with and for Bishop Ger.
May the God who has guided Ossory through the generations walk with you today and tomorrow. May He give you strength for the challenges ahead, wisdom for the changes you face, gratitude for the traditions you inherit, and courage to hand on the faith with renewed life.
Through the prayers of St Kieran of Saighir, St Canice, and all the holy men and women of Ossory may God bless you, guide you and keep you in His peace, now and always.
