The Lourdes Youth Helpers are a voluntary group of approximately 50 young people who accompany the Ossory Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes from 22nd – 27th May every year.
Youth Helpers enable the assisted pilgrims to partake in the activities of the Lourdes pilgrimage by helping with transport (including wheelchairs, voitures and blue chairs) and most importantly their time, talent, friendship and good humour.
As pilgrims themselves, students are invited to join in the choir, play a musical instrument and take an active part in all ceremonies (Lector/Altar Server/Offertory etc). The schedule provides ample time for students to enjoy some personal time for reflection at the sanctuary as well as a special youth liturgy with the Bishop. Working as a team in the spirit of St. Bernadette, Lourdes offers students a memorable experience of faith and friendship.
Student places available to each of the second level schools in the Diocese of Ossory. Interested students must be 16 yrs. or older on the date of travel in any given year and should speak with their School Chaplain, Pilgrimage Liaison Teacher or R.E. Teacher for further details.
The Youth Director who co-ordinates the Youth Helpers makes contact with each school soon after return to school in September. Each school follows the Directives for Ossory Lourdes Pilgrimage Youth Section (Document Link) (PDF Link)
Applications for interview are made in school before October midterm break. Students complete the Interview Application Form (Document Link) (PDF Link) and return them to their School Chaplain or teacher. Interviews are then held in school in early November.
Students who are successful in securing a place as a youth helper must fill out the Official Application Form (Document Link) (PDF Link). Parents must also fill out the Activity Permission Form A2. (Document Link ) (PDF Link). Both these forms are then returned to the Youth Director by the deadline date (last Friday in November each year).
